Introduction to Encaustic Painting:

In this one day introduction to Encaustic Painting students will explore the delights of working in wax. Students will receive a strong grounding in safe studio practices and encaustic tools and materials. Techniques covered in this class include prepping supports, applying smooth wax surfaces, adding texture, fusing, working with encaustic paint, scraping and layering, mark making and incising. Students can expect to leave with small finished encaustic paintings.

Prerequisite: None  Class Fee:  $160 (Workshop price includes all materials, instruction and lunch.) Hours: 10:00-4:00

Encaustic Mixed Media Techniques:

This one day class is a natural follow up to Introduction to Encaustic Painting. Building on the basics, students will explore a variety of mixed media materials and techniques as they apply to wax. Techniques covered in this class include toning with pastels, oil and inks, adding imagery with collage and transfer, surface treatment with foils and powders, and adding complexity with stencils. Students can expect to leave with small finished works.

Prerequisite: Usually best for students with some encaustic experience and/or Introduction to Encaustic Painting.  Class Fee:  $160 (Workshop price includes all materials, instruction and lunch.)  Hours: 10:00-4:00

Encaustic Photography:

In this one day class students will learn how wax can take photography to a new level. In the age of digital photography and computer editing programs, manipulating images has been removed from a hands-on approach that we once had in the dark room. Encaustic allows for physical manipulation of images through pouring, layering, embedding and tinting with oils.

Prerequisite: None  Class Fee:  $160 (Workshop price includes all materials, instruction and lunch.) Hours: 10:00-4:00

Introduction to Wax and Paper:

In this one day introduction to Paper and Wax you will be able to create your own dimensional encaustic supports and work on these amazing forms with wax, oil and mixed media. These forms have been described as “the perfect encaustic panel” for its ability to withstand the rigors of shipping during extreme weather conditions. They are lightweight and extremely durable. Learn the value of creating your encaustic painting from the ground up in this fast paced class.

Prerequisite: Usually best for students with some encaustic experience.  Class Fee:  $160 (Workshop price includes all materials, instruction and lunch.)  Hours: 10:00-4:00

Wire, Wax and Plaster:

This one day class will introduce students to one of the ways that encaustic can be moved into sculpture. Using wire mesh, paper clay and plaster gauze students will explore creating forms with wax compatible surfaces. Students can expect to take home one completed sculpture.

Prerequisite: None.  Class Fee:  $160 (Workshop price includes all materials, instruction and lunch.)  Hours: 10:00-4:00

Explorations in Cold Wax:

Cold wax is similar to encaustic in that the process includes adding layers of luscious color, subtracting paint, excavating by scraping and improvisational mark making. But unlike encaustic, cold wax requires no special equipment to buy or the need for extraordinary studio ventilation. Like its name indicates, cold wax involves painting at room temperature without fusing between layers. Once the basic concepts are presented, Michelle will demonstrate a variety of tools, approaches and mixed media applications to cold wax. If you have had some experience in encaustic, you will enjoy exploring with oil and cold wax. If you are someone who has been reluctant to try hot wax, this would be a great introduction to getting the visual texture and the complexity of the marked surface without concerns about using heat.

Prerequisite: None  Class Fee:  $160 (Workshop price includes all materials, instruction and lunch.) Hours: 10:00-4:00
